To remember the Golden Memories of hisgreat-grandfather Damoo Dhotre (Damu Dhotre), Anand Dhotre organized 39th Death AnniversaryTribute Programme on 23^rd January, 2012 at Peshwe Park (SarasBagh)in Pune, Maharashtra (India). Damoo Dhotre worked in Circus Industry for wellover 40 years.

Great Golden Circus - A Circus which I may have seen more than any other circus. The reason is only that it performs mostly in Gujarat. So it visits to my city more often than any other circus. Lastly it visited us in the year 2007.

After a successful camp at Ahmedabad, now it is running at BRC Ground, Udhana, Surat, Gujarat. As soon as you visit this circus, you will see every thing new - the tent, the curtains, the outside decoration and even the acts.

I visited GGC three times at Ahmedabad. It really proves to be golden entertainment for all age gruop. I saw a huge & HAPPY crowd. The smile on the faces of spectators was the best proof of a successful entertainer.

The acts and the artists are very appealing. Some of the artists of this circus also participated in Television show on Sony Entertainment Television. (Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega)

Ye Duniya Ek Circus Hai

Those who had seen old Doordarshan Channel (India's Government Broadcasting Channel) will instantly know what I am talking about just by reading the title ! It was the title song of Sharukh Khan's famous TV Serial 'Circus'. While surfing You-Tube, I found this part & this part only (which is so valuable for any circus lover) and I am really Thankful to the person who uploaded it. I need to share this with all of you, especially Indian Readers !

The quality of video & audio may not be great but the most important is what it contains ! The serial was broadcast around 1989. The title song compared this whole world with circus. Damoo Dhotre - 109th Birthday

Today is the 109th Birthday of Indian Hero – Damoo Dhotre (Damu Dhotre). To tribute this great man, here I have put an incident from his life. It shows how big risks the ring-master takes during his life time ! There is only a thin difference between life and death. And yet he takes risk to entertain us.

A ‘Public Show’ of a huge Circus was held by the King of Kolhapur for the poor people. It was obvious that the number of people would be great because of the free show and it could not be held in the Big Top (Circus Tent). So it was decided to hold the show on wrestling ground called Khas Baug. This ground could accommodate around 20,000 people but far more people came for the show and every bit of ground was occupied.

When the circus performers saw the large number of spectators, they felt much energized because they could rarely get a chance to perform their acts in front of such a huge crowd. So they were very careful and excited about their performance. And after other performances, that moment came when Damoo Dotre could show his thrilling acts of Wild Animals. He was as excited as everyone over the big crowd.

The Wild – Animal acts were to be performed in the temporary cage erected in the middle of the ground. Therefore Damoo Dhotre thought to impress and scare those who sat very close to the cage. For this purpose, he chose a lioness ‘Mamā’ which had a calm nature. But during the acts she used to roar in such a way that the spectators felt sure, she would attack the ring-master if he was a bit careless towards her. So to take advantage of her rumble, Damoo made a whip-lash near her. The lioness roared loudly in reply. Damoo pointed a stick towards a stool and ordered her to sit on it in a loud voice. Instead of following the order, she roared again more loudly than before. Once again, Damoo ordered her to sit on the stool in a louder voice. In reply, the lioness growled and tossed her paw towards Damoo. He ordered her repeatedly to sit on the stool.

By now, the spectators had already started to get scared because her growling was so loud that it could be heard above the noise made by twenty five to thirty thousand people. The spectators started murmuring among themselves. This made the lioness ‘Mamā’ angrier and the lioness which was usually calm by nature, really got angry that day. She started her attempts to attack Damoo and he started his efforts to calm her down and to save himself.

When lioness ‘Mamā’ saw her attempts were worthless, she growled with anger and jumped on the nearby table. But she landed on the other side of it and another table fell on her. So she started to retreat but in doing so she pushed a tigress ‘Champā’. This made the tigress angry and both started fighting in the cage. She pushed the lioness ‘Mamā’ to the ground twice. Looking her friend in trouble, another lioness ‘Baby’ also went to help her. Another tiger ‘Moti’ saw two lionesses fighting with a single tigress; he also jumped into the battle ground. They tried to harm one another with their powerful paws and sharp claws. Damoo stood in the cage in a state of shock.

Four animals forgot the presence of ring-master and everything around. They just wanted to show their power. And during this fighting, the temporary cage fence also widened because of their force and the rear part of the lioness ‘Baby’ also came out of the cage. Quickly the circus wrestler standing near the cage forcefully shut the gap and secured the cage.

But the spectators were now in such a frightening condition that they stood up from their place. Through the cloud of dirt, they saw four wild-animals fighting violently. They thought that the animals might come out of the cage at any time. They started shouting to run out.

In between such commotion, Damoo’s condition was really terrible. He had to manage animals and also to save his life. The result of any mistake would be fatal. Only one forceful strike with paw of these animals was enough to kill. But he started to separate animals from their fight. He used his whip, stick and a table as a shield from animal attack. He could not hit them with his whip because it would raise their anger even more.

While Damoo was trying to separate the animals, the frightened people had already vanished and the ground had emptied considerably. The four animals also got tired and they stopped their fighting. Fortunately Damoo Dhotre came out of the cage without a single scratch on his body. By now, it was evening.

This was the first time when he realized how difficult it was to separate wild-animals from their fight. He knew about many ringmasters who had lost their lives in such situations. Today he himself got a hint of the danger involved in it. But that was a part of his everyday work. A ring-master can not let his animals fight among themselves and injure to a fatal level. That day, Damoo made his animals perform the regular act and locked the animals safely in their respective cages.

Really the life of Animal Trainer is full of excitement along with the risk of life at each and every moment.

Recently I was given a nice book by a Circus Enthusiast from my city Shailav Chhaya. It is written by Harkisan Mehta and the title is "સરકસના સાહસો" (Sarkasnaa saahaso - Adventures of Circus). This book is about the life of another famous Animal Trainer Alfred Court. The author has described life long adventures from which he had experienced during his Circus career. The book was first published in 1966. And to our pleasant surprise, the book is dedicated to our very own - Damoo Dhotre.

Dear Reader,

For a Circus fan like me, being friends with Circus Artists is like a greatest achievement. Since my childhood, I am attracted to their acts, their style. I am always surprised to see how easily they perform even the hardest acts. I still remember how I made my first Artist-Friend. It was the year of 2007. He used to work in the Great Golden Circus. I was just standing near the ground and he passed from there. I asked him to give me his autograph. (You may think it silly, but for me Circus Artists are no less than any celebrity !) He talked to me very nicely and also gave me his autograph. He also introduced me to some of his fellow artists.

After so many years, he is still my friend. Now he is not in Great Golden Circus. Actually, he worked in several other Circuses since then. During these years, he married and now he is a proud father of a very charming boy. His wife was also a Circus Artist. He has seen hard time, happy time and everything in between. But whenever I meet him, he remains cheerful always. He also helped me in meeting several other artists.

Here in this world, we want a lot many things. We never get satisfied with what we have. But in the Circus, these artists are happy and well-contented with their lives. Indian Circus Industry has already been facing problems and Government gives no support. On the contrary, they create new hurdles in the way of Circus. Answering to my question about ‘Child Abuse’, an artist told me that they are not at all ill treated. They can financially support their families by working in the Circus. Their brothers/sisters can get education. They get safety in the Circus, especially girl artists. We come across the news like poor girls are sold in red-light areas. But in Circus, they get a chance to earn in a respectful manner. What’s better than this ?

Please remember, this was not a prearranged interview or anything. I got such information just in general conversation. I know that every coin has two sides. But I have seen that only darker side is given much importance and ill-publicity but not the brighter side. If Government and/or Social Organizations can not appreciate the valuable contribution of Circus in the artists’ life, they should not blame Circus at all.

In one of my meetings, I asked an artist how he sees his future ? Will he ever want to leave circus ? He gave me a very touching answer in the form of a very popular Indian song :

Jeena Yahaan, Marna Yahaan, Iske Siva Jaana Kahaan ?

(We live here, we die here, where else we go ?)

This is the famous song of Indian Circus based Movie – Mera Naam Joker (My Name is Joker). This movie was filmed at Gemini Circus. The song says that an artist spends his entire life in the Circus. He has no where to go other than Circus because he knows only this art. He knows only this way of living.

Jumbo Entertainment

Hello Reader,

Jumbo Circus has been playing in our City for three weeks now and I have visited it for three times now. As this Circus has visited for the first time here, I was very much exited to see the shows. After watching three shows, I can definitely say that it is one of the few entertaining Circuses. Many new programs are included in this Circus. The Government has put a ban on performance of Big Cats like Tigers and Lions, then here we have little white pussy cats ! So fluffy & cute they look and yet they perform their act very nicely. People feel amazed to see the weight lifter who can lift weight of around 120 kg using his hands and teeth.

The Russian Artists ride the horse so swiftly that it our takes breath away ! Camels and Elephants are well trained. And artists are trying their best to keep our interest in their acts. There are also usual acts of Flying Trapeze, Bike Jump, Bike Riding in the Globe, our very lovely and funny Clowns, etc. During weekends almost whole tent is jam-packed and that’s a very good thing for the business of any Circus. Now the circus has gone, but I just want to thank all the visitors.

Animal Training

Hello Reader,

In India, there is a ban on animal performance in Circuses. The Government believes that animals are not treated well in Circuses. So they snatched away all the exotic animals like Lions, Tigers, Leopards, etc. Self claiming 'Animal Lovers' became happy about that. But did they check anything after taking away these animals from Circuses ? Animals were given to various zoos. Did these 'Animal Lovers' ensure a happy life at these zoos ? I can not understand why they like some special animals especially related to Circuses.

I think, it has been a trend to harass Circus. No 'Animal Lover' worries about stray cattle or dogs or pigs because they can not earn name in helping these animals but they will surely get attention in working against Circuses. These people are only attention seekers and want to get publicity any how.

Circuses treat animals well and I have already written about it on this blog. (click here to read it.) So here I am posting a video which shows how gently animals are trained.

Always remember, Animals are like children to the Circus Owners. They are like Parents to them. Parents may become strict in the training of their children but their love is always there.

If you are also an 'Animal Lover', Help Circus to Help your favourite Animal. Don't just blame Circuses. Please .......!!!!

While surfing internet, I found this lovely news which I must share with you all. It is 'International Clown Fest'. Clowns are the heart of any Circus. They make us all laugh with their naughty and INNOCENT acts.

Why have I put "innocent" in Capitals ??? Because now a days, we see many comedy shows where they 'TRY' to make people laugh with all the vulgar actions or dual meaning words. Sometimes, you are unable watch such programmes with the entire family.

Child Abuse in Circus ?

For many years, Circuses are blamed that they exploit children working in the Circus. But WHO DECIDES THIS ??? WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF CHILD USE OR ABUSE ?????

Do you think, “Training” is abuse ? If so, why do parents send their children to different coaching classes apart from study ?? The child has to go through tough training if he/she wants to excel in whatever he/she joins in. Take the case of Karate. You must know that the Karate training is tough. But you also know that it is for the betterment of the child. Then why TOUGH training of Circus is blamed only ?? It is for the Safety of the artist himself.

Training is something which can be given at a very raw age so that they can be moulded for the work ahead ! While making pots, the Potter moulds the clay when it is still raw ! It is as simple as that. Early training helps the child to develop skills required for his/her act. Remember : World Class Champions are trained at early age.

In some cases, artists are the only breadwinner of their families. If they don’t work, their family may not survive. So they need to work at very early age. Some ‘Children Welfare Organizations’ go to circuses and fetch Artist under the name of Child Abuse. But do they give “Better” Living to them after their so called ‘Rescue Operation’ ? Do they give employment to their Parents so that the children don’t have to work at the Circuses ?

Circus is an ART just like Dance, Drama, Painting, Music and so on and it must be given proper respect. Circus Artists give a great amount of time just to perfect a single act ! Instead of giving proper encouragement to Artists and to Circus, ONLY Blames and Disrespect are given ! Those who can not respect ART has no RIGHT to blame it !

In the name of “Co-Curricular Activities”, some parents force their children to join various classes. The Child remains busy doing these classes all day long and just exhausts at the end of the day. But no one can see any child abuse there. In carrying the load of the ‘Dreams’ of their parents, these children are no better than the beasts of burden. Some parents want their child to become famous over night. They just push their children without asking their likings. Snatching away Childhood is also an Abuse !

If you really want to support Children working in the Circus, than ask Help for the Circuses from the Government. Ask for the Education of the Artists ! But before blaming of ‘ABUSE’ to circus, check your surroundings and you will find innocence of childhood is being snatched away !

2nd World Circus Day Celebration

Recently on 16 April, 2011, the Second World Circus Day was celebrated. It was celebrated by 160 circuses across 39 countries in the world. From India, only two entries were sent. First, the Rambo Circus which is currently running in Hyderabad. They organized an open air Circus show so that all can see the circus life closely.

Second celebration took place in Pune. It was organized by Swa. Damoo Dhotre Pratistan. Anand Dhotre, the President of this NGO, demanded better facilities for the circus. He gave the message of 'Save Tiger' on this occasion. To know more please click here.

First Show

In the year 1880, on 20 March, a performance was done ! And it started the era of Indian Circus !

Vishnupant Chatre performed his horse riding tricks in front of selected spectators including Rajah of Kurduwadi. His wife became an animal trainer and a trapeze artist as well. He did this performance with his pupils in the equestrian (Horse Riding) department.

And we got our first circus as Great Indian Circus. Then on, Indian Circus Industry progressed until recent times. It was the best form of entertainment during its golden time.

Invasion of electronic mediums of entertainment have dazzled people with its virtual brightness that people have lost connection with the real form of entertainment. Circus Artists take real risk without any retakes or camera tricks.

Today, I just want to request all the readers : Please appreciate the Circus, Circus artists, their hard work ! Please visit the circus that is playing in your city. Encourage others to visit. Let's help Circus now or it will fade away !!!

From India, only two entries have been sent. We have many circuses. So other circuses must take part in the celebration of the World Circus Day.

Indian Circus Industry needs help and this is the best time to show people what we have to offer for their entertainment. Do some special activity like parade, throw a party or any thing that can be helpful to our beloved Circus Industry.

Golden Entertainment, Always !

The Great Golden Circus – A very familiar name especially in Gujarat (State of India). Recently I visited this Circus which is now running at Kankaria Football Ground in Ahmedabad City. I have visited this Circus more than any other Circus because this Circus visits our city very frequently. Last I saw it in 2008.

As soon as I got there, I got a pleasant surprise that a lot of spectators waiting to see the Circus, even if it has been playing for more than a month. New Tent, New Equipments and even New Dresses of Artists are equally pleasing. What I don’t like are the people who threw rubbish inside the tent. It is OK to enjoy popcorns or chips during the show but it is NOT OK if you throw empty plastic bags here and there inside the tent.

Anyway, it was a very joyful sight to see spectators of every age group enjoying the show and cheering artists for their brave acts.

Thanks to all who watched the Circus and appreciated the Acts ! Those who haven't seen it, I can just say that you missed a GOLDEN Chance !

Vishnupant Chatre

Vishnupant Chatre (1840 - 1906)

Dear Reader,

Today is the death anniversary of this legendary man, the initiator of Indian Circus - Late Shree Vishnupant Chatre.

Born in a small village Ankalkhop in Sangali,Maharashtra, Vishnupant Chatre is known as the Pioneer of the Indian Circus. He mastered horse-riding. In the beginning, he worked as a horse trainer with the Raja of Kuruduwad. During his visit to William Chirini's Italian Circus, he heard the boastful remark of William Chirini that Indians were not ready to have their own circus. To give a powerful answer to his boastful words, he decided to establish a Circus. Thus, the first Indian Circus show was performed in 1880 in the presence of selected guests. The Circus was given name 'Grand Indian Circus'. It travelled not only in India but also in South and East Asian countries and even in US.

This Great Man is the reason that present day we are together on this blog. Let's salute this man, his patriotism, his proud sprits that we got this purest form of entertainment that we call - C I R C U S

Rambo Circus - Real Fun

Recently I visited Rambo Circus which is running in Pune. Rambo Circus is one the biggest circuses in India. As soon as I reached there, I got a very pleasant surprise. The whole set up of Circus has been transformed to a very Modern and Viewer Friendly manner. They have given more outer space for the waiting viewers. The comfortable chairs, water-proof & fire-proof air-conditioned tent, high-tech lighting and of course all the very best artists from India and abroad too ! The on-line booking is an added benefit for the viewers.

I remember when I was in early college years, I saw Rambo Circus first. It was then when I realized that our Circus too can change to international level circuses. From then on, this fact has never been changed for Rambo Circus. Every time surprising acts, with changing tricks in each show and funny tricks by jokers stick spectators to their seats.

In this modern time, when the influence of electronic mediums of entertainment is rising, the Circuses need to improve and meet such a standard where people can still go and enjoy Circus. Change is the law of Life. Though it is really difficult, Rambo Circus has proven that it is possible, if we try ! The credit to all these favourable changes to the Circus goes to the owner Mr Sujit Dilip & the founder Mr P T Dilip. They have devoted their lives to the upliftment of the Circus.

Now a days when we see the reports that Indian Circus Industry has been dying, the Rambo Circus has shown us the way to come out of this sad picture. It is like a Ray of Hope for our beloved Circus Industry. The clear message is that : WE can go ahead if WE WANT ! We need firm will-power and a few steps in a proper direction ! We need to create opportunity if we don't get one !

Abode of Indian Circus : Thalassery

Thalassery also known as Tellicherry, is in the Malabar Region of Kerala State in South India. District Headquarter Kannur is about 21 km away from it. Though it is a small town, it has a big impact in the history of Indian Circus. In fact, it is known as the Home of Indian Circus.

The thought of Thalassery and Circus brings a name in mind of a legendary person of Indian Circus - Kelleri Kunhikannan. He was a gymnastic teacher in the Basel Mission school of Gundert. When Vishnupant Chatre's Indian Circus visited Thalassery, it brought a major change in his life. He made a deal with Chatre that his students would get employment in Chatre's Circus.

He established the Circus Training School at Chirakkara, Thalassery in 1901. His first and prominent students were Pariyali Kannan, Irimban Kannari, Kunnath Yeshoda & Vendi Madhavi.

Even today, the coaches and artists from Thalassery have a great demand. A proposal to start a Circus school is also under consideration. It will give employment to many people. Moreover, this city is known for Cricket and Bakery as well. Really Three Popular Cs : Circus, Cricket & Cakes !!!

Today is the 39th Death Anniversary of World Famous Circus Artist - Damoo Dhotre (Damu Dhotre). He was an excellent animal trainer. He was a mountain of courage who could handle fierce animals like tigers, lions, panthers, etc. quite easily. From the age of 11 he worked in Circus industry for well over 40 years.

To remember Golden Memories of his great-grandfather Damoo Dhotre, Anand Dhotre organized 39th Death Anniversary Tribute Programme at Rambo Circus in Pune, Maharashtra (India).

The Historical Photographic Poster was inaugurated by the Mr P. T. Dilip, the Founder of Rambo Circus. All the eminent personalities related to Circus were present on this occasion. Mr Sujit Dilip, the Owner, Rambo Circus and the members of Rambo Circus Family gave their valuable support.

I am feeling proud to share this information that Mr Sujit Dilip, The Proprietor of Rambo Circus is going to represent India in the 35th International Circus Festival in Monte-Carlo. It is really a matter of joy that our own Circus is now recognized internationally. Mr Sujit Dilip has always taken special efforts in keeping the Rambo Circus updated with the changing time. Recently, he also held International Circus Festival at Mumbai.

Attention Circus Viewers

Dear Viewer,

"Praises and Criticisms are the two sides of One coin !"

Today I am sharing such information that I am NOT happy to share. It brings shame to the Circuses. But it is also necessary to make viewers aware about such thing. I am really sorry to those who feel bad when they will come to know about this matter.

Please Note that this is NOT the case of Each and Every Circus. So read the following, keeping in mind that it doesn't apply to all Circuses.

There are some people who may cheat the viewers at Parking lot or at the Ticket Window. But you can save yourself from being cheated if you show some alertness.

: At Parking Lot :

There is always a person who collects money at Parking Lot. If he wants to cheat, he would do something like this. As soon as you give your currency note (say a 10 rupees note), secretly he would make a tear at it and refuses to accept the note. He may also tell you to lock the vehicle or to turn off the petrol tap of your two wheeler or to close windows of your car just to brake your concentration. NOW if you don't take that note back, and give him another, he will also do the same i. e. tearing the note and refusing to accept it. So he has TWO notes. Now instead of returning both notes to you, he may return only ONE. So if you face this kind of situation, don't forget to take notes back. And when you pay for parking, hold the note in your hands and show him that it has not been torn out.

Now let's go to another place where someone else is waiting to deceive us :

: At Ticket Window :

If you are giving a high amount note and receive multiple notes in return, Count them before leaving the Counter. Let's check this example for better understanding. If a person wants to buy only one ticket of Rs. 150/-. Now he gives Rs. 500/- note. If the Ticket Vendor wants to cheat, he will return change back like this. Two notes of Rs. 100/-, two notes of Rs. 50/- and FOUR Rs. 10/- notes. This sums to 200+100+40 = 340. But when you say that he has given you Rs. 10/- less, he would ask to let him check those money and also show you a Rs. 10/- coin lying on the counter. Actually he had put it on the counter while you were counting your change. So you may think that you had forgotten to take that coin. He then returns money that he had taken back to 'CHECK' by himself. THAT'S THE TRICK ! You will think that he has given the entire Rs. 340 plus Rs. 10/- coin back then WAIT !!! Recheck you money ! He may have taken a hundred rupees from it. And you may never know it ! So whenever you give a large amount Note, Please check the balance money that you get in return. And do it TWICE even if you had counted them earlier !

I hope, I am able to explain you this properly. I am sure, it may be helpful to you.

In case, you feel cheated, contact the Circus Manager immediately. Circus Management or the Owner may be unaware of such persons who spoil the image of Circus. Circuses run entirely on the funds collected from the viewers. If they feel cheated, they may never return to see any Circus Again ! Please understand this.

My Visit to Moonlight Circus

Dear Reader,

Welcome to my blog. Today, I visited the "Moonlight Circus" which is running at Kambhat (old name - Cambay). I saw its advertisement a few days back behind an auto-rickshaw. I didn't know about it so I decided to visit it myself. And my visit prove to be a pleasant surprise :

The Circus has a lot of new acts and surprises for the spectators. First thing you will notice is its name which is quite attractive and other than usual !

They have a very nice live orchestra which plays amazing melodies and a SINGER too ! Yes, they have a male singer who sings very sweetly. I am sure he can give a good competition to any "Singing Reality Show" contestant. Some acts are preformed with his background songs.

And the act- sequences are also different from the usual Circuses. They too have African Artists who perform different types of Acts. The animal trainers also very good. I really liked the Elephant Act. The trainer made them move so perfectly that you can put it on par with the International Circus. The Horse Riders also run horses faster than the regular speed.

The timings are 3, 6 and 9 pm so that those who work late can also enjoy the Circus ! Really I liked it very much. If you live in or near Kambhat, I request you to pay at least one visit to the Circus. I am sure, you won't be disappointed !

The last day is 3rd October. I will surely going to see it again.

My Visit to Gemini Circus

So finally I got chance to see the Gemini Circus which is now playing in Vadodara since 30^th July. It was really necessary for me to go and see the circus today.

This is because 15^th August is our Independence Day and also the Birthday of Gemini Circus. So I grabbed the opportunity and went to see the Circus at 7 pm show.

It started with usual Flying Trapeze act, one of the oldest and the most exiting act of any circus ! There were many new acts mixed with old ones. But each one left its impact on the spectators.

Now Indian Circuses are also trying to keep pace with the changing world. The result of this is the entry of Foreign Artists in Indian Circuses. There are Russian and African Artists with our Indian Artists. Quickly changing acts don’t let us go away from entertainment ! We can see the hard work put by these Artists and the Circus Staff to make a successful show.

You can instantly feel that the Circuses are now trying to attract more and more people. Though they face financial problems, they invest money in acquiring new types of equipments, lightings, water-proof tents, air-conditions, hiring foreign artists, etc.

The Circuses have started improving and now it is our duty to appreciate them. Please pay at least one visit to the Circus. I am quite sure you will also be charmed by this Purest Form of Entertainment that we fondly call -

As soon as I opened the morning newspaper, I got this good news that finally Gemini Circus is coming to Vadodara. Usually the Circus comes to the city in around mid June but I thought No Circus will come to the city because it is almost the end of July. And now I saw the advertisement in the newspaper !

Welcome to the entire Gemini Circus family. Hope they find our city as one of the profitable cities. I prey God to bring Glory and Prosperity to the Circus Family as they always deserve !

We may not know how much hard work and perseverance are put by all the members of Circus Family. Let's each one of us pay at least one visit to the Circus. I am sure you will find it very Enjoyable !

World Famous Circus Artist - Damoo Dhotre

Think of the great Indian circus artists, name comes instantly to mind – Damoo Dhotre (Damu Dhotre) the incomparable animal trainer from the world greatest circus Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey circus.

Damoo, as the short name struck to him during his lifetime, was born in a poor family in Pune. Right from childhood, fear was not the word that could be found in the dictionary of this boy, who had not much interest in education, which speaks of his poor educational background.

Therefore, when his uncle Shelarmama's circus came down to Pune, the young Damoo knew where his destiny lay. Much against the opposition from his mother, he joined his uncle's circus at the age of 11. Initially he had struggle hard and practiced vigorously to gain a niche for himself.

Finding the youngsters love for animals, his uncle made him take up to training of animals, under the well established artistes at the circus. At a very young age he was made a 'Ring Master'. He worked for 14 years with the circus and toured Malaysia, Thailand, Burma, Indonesia, Ceylon and China.

He earned instant fame in these countries of the fearless 'Wild Animal Trainer', who made such ferocious animals like Lion and Tiger follow his every command. Such was aura enjoyed in those days by Damoo, as some of his early associates recall, that a pin drop inside the big top, the moment Damoo entered the cage.

His unbound restless energy, spirit of adventure, made him realize that if he was to make a name for himself world over, he would have to migrate abroad. This is what he did. First he worked for three years in a proprietor Isako's Russian circus. In 1939 at the invitation of Bertram Mills circus from France he joined them in 1939, The World War II that followed soon, made him sign a contract with the world renowned Ringling Brothers 'Barnum & Bailey' Circus in the USA.

He worked with what the circus was known as the 'Greatest Show on Earth' for 10 years, earning huge accolades all over Europe and America as that fearless Indian Animal Trainer. Recognition followed him whenever he went. When America joined the allied forces in the fight against Nazi Germany, like all other young men, he was inducted into the army and served American Army between 1943-46.

While during his stay in the United States he got his biography 'Wild Animal Man' published and from which one chapter is included by Maharashtra(India) Government Marathi textbook of 9th standard (Earlier in 4th standard Marathi textbook).

After serving the circus industry for well over 40 years from the age of 11, Damoo Dhotre, finally returned and settled down in 'Sub hash Nagar' in Pune. He got his bungalow built which is appropriately named as 'Circus Villa'. This proud Indian unlike others, who changed their names, always took pride to himself as India's son – Damoo Dhotre.

The Word "CIRCUS"

Dear Reader,

Welcome to my blog. I am sad to find that some people use the word “Circus” as a Disrespectful term. Some use the word to show “Chaos” or “Disorder”. But that is never true for the Circus. The word is defined in the dictionary as :

Circus n. (pl. -es)
1. travelling show of performing acrobats, clowns, animals, etc.

2. colloq. a scene of lively action. b group of people in a common activity, esp. sport.

3. open space in a town, where several streets converge.

4. Rom. Antiq. arena for sports and games. [Latin, = ring]

All the members of the circus leave their families behind and perform for us with smiling faces. They spend their life time in mastering their acts. They face a lot of pain while their acts. It is also a form of ART. And I think, it is one of the purest forms of Entertainment. So if we don’t give them respect, it is really a sad thing.

'Circus' is a very Broad Term. Please don’t use the word in an impolite manner.

Rambo Circus is one of the Largest Circuses in India. It has always showed International Quality Acts. I feel proud that I got the opportunity to distribute my leaflets at such a large Circus.

My Answer to Animal Welfare Organizations

There are many Animal Welfare Institutes that work for the betterment of the animals. It is nice that they are worried for the Animals. They carry out ‘Investigation’ themselves and also write ‘Letters’ to different ‘Statuary Bodies’ to take necessary actions. They also blame that Circus Owners don’t keep their animal properly. But let me tell you that the Circus Animals are the Heart of the Shows. Many cities where there is no Zoo, the children don’t have any other way to see Real Animals except Circus. They can see Elephants, Camels, Horses, Hippopotamus, Dogs, Exotic Birds etc. They are Living Assets to the Circus Owners. They Love their animals more than anybody. The Circus Owners know how to keep their animals.

Let’s consider that the animals at the Circus may found sick during your so-called ‘investigation’. Then I want to ask YOU – What did YOU do ? Did you give any medical help on the spot ? Or just came home worriedly and wrote a few lines to the several ministries that may work for animals. During that time, the sick animal would have suffered a lot. You must understand that ‘Blaming’ someone is Easy but Reality may be quite different. Animals are the Heart and Soul of the Circus Shows and they are really valuable to the Circus Owners. I asked several artists who have worked in major Circuses in India. They tell that the Owners treat their animals very well. Circus Industry is already facing many problems. Moreover, People like you are increasing problems for them.

And if you are so much worried about animals, please do the following :
· Go and Stop all the Slaughter Houses ? Animals are KILLED there and eaten by PEOPLE. Is it OK with you ? You must know that All the animals are same, whether a little Chicken or Mighty Elephant.
· The elephants are used as slaves and they are forced to carry heavy logs in the jungles.
· Rivers like the Ganga are polluted so much that various fish species, Gariyal Crocodiles, Turtles, etc. are in a great danger. Do work for these animals or we may lose them forever.
· A lot of jungles are disappearing rapidly. Can you stop deforestation ? It is the house of your Loving Animals. What have you done in that matter ?
· So start working in that direction where it is really helpful.
· If you want to help Circus Animals, please tell the Government to give proper facilities to the Circus. Don’t try to snatch away animals from the Circus. Instead of that keep a Veterinary Doctor with yourself and if you really find any sick animal, give treatment on the spot.

Let’s keep in mind :

Blaming each other will not give any Solution.

Recently I visited another city - Nagpur (857 km away from my town) to meet my friend at Circus. He is an artist there. When I went there, it was almost night and the atmosphere was rainy. It also rained for two days. So I could not stay at the circus.

When I went there again next Morning, I was shocked to see the conditions at the circus ground. The open gutter was running near by the ground. The entire ground was covered with thick mud. The Circus Owner was trying hard to make it better. They tried to cover the ground with sand and other material so that the ground condition can improve. They did not get any help from the Local Authority.

Now when Local Authority gives the ground on rent, they charge very high amount. Then they are also responsible to fulfil for all the necessary requirements to the rent payer. But I found that Local Authorities are only interested in collecting money and ignoring their responsibilities !

I think, the government should try to revive the Circus Industry. Please provide better facilities at reasonable prices in terms of ground rent, electricity connections, water-supply, taxes, etc.

Please you can do these things. The Government may not give any DIRECT MONETORY HELP but if you provide basic facilities for free or nominal charges, it will also be a great help ... !!!

CIRCUS HAS JUST GONE

Welcome to My Blog.

Having a Circus in own city is always a joyful thing – especially for those who really like Circus Very … Very … Much.

This year also we had Rambo Circus. When I came to know about the Circus’ arrival, I was overjoyed. I went to the site of the Circus every day, just to see how they set up the Circus Tent and every thing else.

Then the day came when it really started shows. The time between Starting and Ending days flew away like wink of eye. And the last day approached. As always I went to see the last day last show. At that time I actually realized how much I love circus ! Last moments were hard for me because I could not even bare the thought that the Circus is going out of the city.

Form experience, I have realized that we don’t understand the value of someone or something until we lose it. The circus will come only next year but until that time I have to wait. A Long Wait … !

If I come to know about any circus in nearby city, I will definitely go and see.

Oh, you may think how crazy I am behind the circus ! But that’s what I am !

First of all, I want to tell that I feel really sorry that I can not write regularly on my blog. I am really ‘Thankful’ to Blogger.com for making this possible that I can express my ideas to people in the whole world. THANKS Again………….!

Running a Circus during this time of adversity is really very hard. Increasing Cost and Decreasing Revenue indeed make the owner to think again about running a Circus. Empty Seats and time to time restrictions imposed by the Government further demoralise the Circus People.

Sometimes, some NGOs also create problems. I don’t want to say that they are doing wrong things. But I read some articles on the internet, that some NGOs / Social-Workers blame Circus for exploitation of Child artists. They lodge case against the Circus Owners.

I want these NGOs / Social-Workers to ask these questions to themselves and then take any action.

1. You say that children are exploited at a Circus. But have you ever seen what were they before entering the circus ? It may be possible that their condition was not that much sound that they could get even their basic necessities. It is quite likely that the work at a circus has given them an opportunity to earn and support their own family.

2. Putting a blame is easy but praising for some noble task is not easy !!! Has any NGO / Social-Worker come forward to help the Circus Industry ? Has anyone praised those noble tasks done by a circus ? For your information, sometimes Orphan Children are also adopted by circus. They are brought up in the circus and have been given a decent life. Even Circus has also given them support in their marriages. Is this not a Noble Task ?

3. Circus also performs shows for charity. They run Free shows for the welfare of the Society like free shows for mentally weak children, fund raising shows for the Earthquake-victim welfare.

4. Circus industry is running in a critical situation and instead of supporting them, Why are you increasing their problems ??? As a responsible institution is it not your Duty to Help and Support the Industry ?

5. NGOs / Social-Workers must understand that if any circus is shut down, many depending on them will be jobless. Circus don’t demand anything from you.

Therefore, I request the NGOs / Social-Workers, specially working in the field of Child Abuse, Please don’t blame but be a support to this dying industry.

They are trying hard to survive. Please Come Forward. HELP.

Just think only one thing : The better the situation of a Circus is, the better the condition of the artists.

Let's Return to Our Childhood

Do you remember the joy, the entertainment that you found when you visited circus !
In childhood, everybody might have visited circus ... !

How amusing it was !

Then what happens that one grows up and forgets that pure enjoyment ?

I know, a person gets busy in many other things that he does not get enough time.

But ask one thing to yourself. Don't you find time to watch movies or games like cricket ?

These things are usual for us because new movies release every Friday and circket has become an everyday game.

But the Circus is altogether a different thing.

It comes once a year.

Can't you pay at least one visit to the circus ?

It is true that I like circus; and I am not trying to force anyone.

On the other hand, it is also very much correct that Circus has also developed many new tricks to attract people.

And when Circus Industry needs our support, we should help them.
And the best way to help is - A VISIT

Support Circus

In this world, there are many people who come forward to help the needy people. They help the poor, physically or mentally disabled, the victims of natural or man-made disaster.

But have you ever thought, there some others also who need our Help and Support ? There is no one to help them ! I think, the Circus Industry in India also needs our Support.

Circus has always fascinated people of all age groups whether a child or an elder. Due to influence of TV & Cinemas, the Circus Industry has been facing a lot of problems. Ban on the performance of Animals like lions, tigers, bears, etc. has increased the burden on Human Artists. They are imposed to find Newer and Riskier acts to attract people.

Under the ‘Big Top’ (the Circus Tent), they show extraordinary acts. They do not have Retakes or Special Effects like we see in the Movies. Living away from their friends & families, Circus Artists hide their sorrows and show their acts with a Smiling Face. They prove the line “Show must go on … … !”

I personally want all of you who are reading this blog, whenever you go to see a Circus next time, PLEASE give the Artists a loud applaud. Appreciate them for what they do to entertain us. Appreciate them for their Amazing Courage and Feat.

Founded by Vishnupant Chhatre, in November 1882 (The Grand Indian Circus), our Circus Industry has completed more than a hundred years. Apart from entertaining us, they became supportive to the society whenever needed. During the freedom struggle, Circus was considered as an important instrument to spread awakening among people. They helped freedom fighters a safe place to hide. The Circus Industry has always tried to fulfil their Social Obligations. For example, Rambo Circus raised fund for the Gujarat Quake victims and also for the dumb, deaf and infirm people.

Now when the Circus Industry needs our help, how can we flee from our responsibility ? the Circus Industry has never asked for any funding (though they need it severely). So how can we fulfil our responsibility ? One way that I can show is that YOU pay at least ONE visit to the Circus whenever it comes to your city. Can we not do even this much ? I don’t know what Government is doing about the Circus Industry. But I want help of every one who has read this article. I hope, you also like Circus. When I saw the Circus ...

Welcome to my blog on Indian Circus Industry.

Since my childhood, I always liked Circus very much. As I grew up, this interest has been increasing. Recently, the “Rambo Circus” visited our city (Vadodara). I saw it once & twice & thrice……….
Actually I liked it so much that I saw it for seven times. Guess what ? One day I saw three constant shows of the Circus and did not get bored at all !!! Then I searched on the internet about the Rambo Circus and I came across their Web-Site and I sent them an e-mail. They not only answered my mail but also sent me two books on Circus World (by Mr Praveen P. Walimbe).

From the book, I came to know many aspects of the Circus Industry. I understood properly what types of problems are faced by Circus of India. When the Circus Industry is weakening, I thought, I must do something which may become helpful to Indian Circus. But what can I do ? I know, alone I can do nothing. But I am sure, I can take help of INTERNET to find people like me who also have the same feelings about Circus and together we can surely do something for our Circus Industry. And what is better than writing a blog, so many people can read it and who knows what would happen next ?

I don’t know, what will be the outcome of my little effort, but if you are also a Circus – Fan just like me, let us join our hands together and find out what can we do to save the Purest Form of Entertainment that we call – C I R C U S.
